Post-G2V2: What’s next for lighter vehicles and expanded tachograph coverage in Europe?

28 august, 2025

The past months have been decisive for the European transport industry. The final deadline for upgrading to the second generation smart tachograph (G2V2) for heavy-duty vehicles has passed, marking an important milestone in the EU’s efforts to improve compliance, safety and fair competition in road transport.

But the tachograph story does not end here. The next stage of implementation is already set, and this time it will affect not only large fleets, but also light commercial vehicles (LCVs) operating internationally.

From G2V2 to the next step

By 19 August 2025, all vehicles engaged in international transport with a maximum permissible mass above 3.5 tonnes were required to be fitted with the new G2V2 tachograph. This advanced device automatically records border crossings, supports satellite positioning, allows remote data checks, and improves security against tampering.

Now attention shifts to the next enforcement wave. According to EU regulations, from 1 July 2026, tachograph use will also become mandatory for light commercial vehicles above 2.5 tonnes when operating across borders. This represents a significant expansion of tachograph coverage and will impact a wide range of businesses, from courier companies to small hauliers.

What changes for light commercial vehicles?

Until now, many operators of vans and smaller trucks were exempt from tachograph obligations. That will soon change. Any LCV over 2.5 tonnes used for international carriage of goods will need to be equipped with a smart tachograph.

This extension is designed to close compliance gaps, ensure fair competition with larger operators, and improve road safety by enforcing driving and rest time rules more consistently across the sector.

For small companies and owner-drivers, this will require both technical adaptation and an administrative shift towards systematic data handling.

Why early preparation is essential

Experience from the G2V2 rollout has shown that leaving retrofits until the last moment creates bottlenecks. Workshops face high demand, waiting times increase, and costs can rise unexpectedly. Planning the installation of tachographs for LCVs well in advance is therefore strongly recommended.

Fleet managers can also align tachograph installation with scheduled maintenance to minimise downtime. Proactive preparation will help smaller businesses avoid compliance risks and potential fines once the July 2026 deadline arrives.

Beyond compliance: operational benefits

While some operators may see the tachograph expansion as a burden, it also brings opportunities. The latest devices and supporting software solutions provide far more than basic compliance data.

Automated border recording reduces manual work. Remote data downloads save time and streamline enforcement checks. Improved protection against manipulation increases trust in the system. And, most importantly, tachograph data can be turned into valuable insights for fleet optimisation, fuel efficiency and driver performance monitoring.

How TachoSafe can help

At TachoSafe, we have been supporting fleets of all sizes in meeting tachograph obligations since the earliest stages of digital implementation. With our downloading equipment such as Tacho2Safe, Tacho5Safe+ and TachoSafe Connect, as well as data analysis services like TachoSafe Lite and TachoSafe WEB, companies gain not only easy compliance, but also an efficient way to manage, analyse and store tachograph data.

For smaller operators preparing for the 2026 changes, these solutions make the transition smoother. Automatic downloads, infringement detection, and secure cloud storage ensure that compliance does not become a daily struggle, but instead an integrated part of operations.

Looking ahead

The expansion of tachograph requirements to lighter vehicles represents an important step towards harmonising transport rules across the EU. For many small and medium-sized businesses, it will be the first time they face tachograph obligations. By preparing early and choosing the right tools, the transition can be managed effectively, with minimal disruption.

TachoSafe remains committed to providing the support, technology and expertise needed to navigate these regulatory changes confidently.
